A Day in the Life of a Working Mom at Walter Supply

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s often challenging to balance work and family life. This is especially true for working mothers who juggle professional responsibilities while raising children. We believe that sharing personal stories can inspire and empower others who may be in similar situations. That’s why we’ve decided to feature Shel, a working mom at Walter Supply, in our blog. Through a series of questions, we delve into her daily life, exploring how she manages her responsibilities at work and home, and how her personal interests influence her professional role. We hope her story will resonate with our readers, offering valuable insights and inspiration.

Can you tell us a little bit about you?

Hello, my name is Shel. I am a 30-year-old mother with three children: twin five-year-old daughters and a seven-month-old son. I graduated from San Jose State University in northern California, where I studied for five years. After graduation, I returned to my home country, got married, and started a family.

Why Did you Choose to Work at Walter Supply?
When my son was about five months old, I unexpectedly had the opportunity to join Walter Supply, a plush toy company. This chance was particularly surprising because, as a mom with a young child, acceptance by most companies is not typical. However, Walter Supply was doing something commendable by offering open hiring to moms with sales abilities who needed to stay at home to care for their children. For me, this job holds special significance as it helped me regain my confidence. As we are aware, being a full-time mom at home often results in a loss of social status, representing a significant sacrifice. However, Walter Supply believes that these moms deserve an opportunity to showcase their abilities, and I seized that chance.

How Do you Balance Motherhood and Work?

Every child loves toys, especially fluffy plush toys. I feel that accompanying my children in their growth process is actually a process of rediscovering my childhood innocence. So when I see various plush toys at work, I feel excited and passionate, just like a child. This job really brings an incredible experience.
Another important reason for maintaining my enthusiasm for work is that long-term companionship with my children has gradually made me feel out of touch with society, which is something that makes me very anxious. However, the job of customer manager and sales at Walter Supply does not require sitting in an office, which is a very precious opportunity, so I cherish it. In the monotonous life of bringing up children, having a job where I can adjust my own time is a very good adjustment. For me, work is not only work, but more of a relaxation of mood in life.
The key to maintaining high efficiency, I believe, is to maintain enthusiasm. Because the time to take care of children is very fragmented, so I will think about work when taking care of children, and make a memo on my phone when necessary. And I write a TO DO LIST for myself every day, so once the children fall asleep, I will start to organize the thoughts of the whole day and start a highly efficient work mode.

How Do your Hobbies Influence your Work?

Making clothes is one of my handicraft hobbies. I really like to make clothes for my children, and I also like to study various clothing fabrics. When I start to turn fabric into finished clothes or toys, I can learn a lot of things, and it has a healing effect for me. Because I often sew, I can roughly judge the workmanship of the plush toys in the picture and how complex they are. This ability is also helpful to my sales work to some extent.

What Does a Typical Day at Walter Supply Look Like for you?

After sending my twin daughters on the school bus at 8 am, I will go to buy food for the day, then go home to make breakfast. I start a day’s work before 9 am. The daytime work is mainly to deal with the affairs mentioned in the customer emails, and also to prepare some sales work (because almost all of my customers are in North America, customers will start work in my evening time) until my daughters come home from school at five in the afternoon, I will pause work, until after ten-thirty at night when my children are all asleep, I will start my night work - sending emails to my customers, reflecting the results of the day’s affairs to the customers.

What is your Roles and Contributions at Walter Supply?

My job is customer manager and sales, my job is to connect customers and various departments of the company, communicate back and forth between customers and various departments, so that customer needs are met, and also reflect the progress of various departments of the company to customers. My biggest contribution should be to reduce the communication difficulty between various departments and customers.

What Are the Challenges you Face at Walter Supply and How Do you Overcome Them?

I think the biggest challenge is that this is a completely new work experience for me, plus I am working remotely, there is no one to teach me hand in hand when I first started, often there will be very confused times. My way of dealing with it is to ask more questions, if there is anything I don’t understand, I will ask directly. Fortunately, my customers and my colleagues and superiors are very nice, and they are also very patient in the process of guidance.

What Is your Proudest Moment at Walter Supply?

My proudest moment should be when I find a very potential customer and have effective communication with the customer. As a salesperson, it is very important to accurately find the target customer, and it is a great test of ability to communicate effectively with the target customer. Every time I can impress a customer with my professionalism, I feel a sense of accomplishment.

What Are your Expectations for the Future at Walter Supply?

I hope to be able to work in this industry with ease. I can talk about everything I learned in this job like a very professional plush toy practitioner, because what I have experienced and learned will all become part of my life.

Last but not least, can you tell us a little story about you?

I have a deep affection for cats. When I was studying abroad, I adopted an orange cat. He was a very gentle and patient boy. During the few years when I felt very lonely studying abroad, he was always there to accompany me. When I lost him, I was heartbroken for a long time. Later, after returning to my home country, this sadness gradually faded. Until one day, I received a surprise gift from my best friend - a small pillow printed with a cartoon picture of my orange cat, this pillow has been treasured in my home ever since.

After graduating and returning to my home country, I adopted another ragdoll cat. His personality was very similar to my first orange cat - gentle and patient. However, last year, my six-year-old cat fell ill and left me, causing me much grief. When I joined Walter Supply, I made a small decision in my heart: I wanted to become one of the best salespeople in the company, and then customize a doll that looks exactly like my ragdoll cat in the company, as a keepsake to be treasured forever in my home. This personal goal not only reflects my love for my pets but also my ambition and dedication towards my role at Walter Supply.
